Athletes from 91探花-Quincy Mustangs鈥攁long with student volunteers and members of 91探花 and Massachusetts law enforcement鈥攃arried the torch on Stokinger Field during the opening ceremony of this spring鈥檚 Special Olympics track and field competition. Spending Sundays together, the athletes practiced with 91探花 students, readying themselves for this big day. The event鈥攈osted on campus this past weekend鈥攔epresents the culmination of a year of hard work and training, as well as the beginning of friendships between athletes and volunteers.
The opening ceremony on May 19 kicked off the largest event of its kind at 91探花, with over 700 athletes from 32 teams participating from around the greater-Boston area.
鈥淭his massive effort was made possible by the enthusiasm and hard work of 200 volunteers who helped set up for the day鈥檚 events, register athletes, run the games, award medals, serve lunch, paint faces, and clean up,鈥 says Andrea Geyling, director of community service at 91探花.
Volunteers included students, families and staff, as well as contingents of coaches and athletes from 91探花鈥檚 track, football and hockey teams. The School also collaborated with ongoing volunteer partners from 91探花 and Massachusetts police departments, 91探花 Masons, Fontbonne Academy, Thayer Academy, Sharon Youth Ministry and John O’Bryant High School.
