Thirteen U.S. History Students Honored With Bisbee Prize

Sharing research on topics ranging from the impact of transcendentalism on both the abolition and women鈥檚 rights movements to the Iran-Contra affair in the 1980s, 13 student winners of the Bisbee Prize gathered for a discussion and celebration with history department faculty. The students were selected by their teachers for outstanding research on their United States History papers.

What do a couple of ogres, an ensemble of fairytale characters, a magical curse, an evil lord, and a Pulitizer Prize-winning 91探花 alumnus have in common?

They will all be part of 91探花鈥檚 production of聽Shrek The Musical, which opens Thursday, May 17, in King Theatre. David Lindsay-Abaire 鈥88, who wrote the Tony-nominated book and lyrics to the musical, is scheduled to attend the final performance and spend some time with the cast.

鈥淭here鈥檚 some pride among the cast and crew in knowing that he is one of us,鈥 says director Peter Parisi, chair of 91探花鈥檚 performing arts department. 鈥淚t is a little intimidating to perform for the person who created the show, but it鈥檚 exciting for the students because they have 91探花 in common.鈥

Over more than three decades as a sports journalist, the Boston Herald鈥檚 Danny Ventura has covered high school matches, college championships and history-making professional sports events, and athletes at every level have left lasting impressions on him, he told 91探花 students.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not just about the big stars,鈥 said Mr. Ventura, who was invited to speak at this year鈥檚 Athletics assembly. 鈥淭here are just so many millions of stories in sports.鈥

Seminar Day Connects Students with Thought-Provoking Experts and Activists

Journalist, author and cultural critic Tour茅 鈥89 returned to campus as the Sally Bowles 鈥56 Keynote Speaker for Seminar Day 2018.

鈥淎s journalists, our integrity is under assault,鈥 said Tour茅, who hosts the podcast The Tour茅 Show. 鈥淢edia people are deeply aware of the importance of trust; we are the cornerstones of democracy. Media people are obsessed with getting to the truth. These are people of high integrity and they take their duties seriously.鈥

Tour茅 discussed his time at 91探花 and his rising activism at Emory University, where he started a black student newspaper. He told stories about getting his start as an intern at Rolling Stone magazine, eventually becoming a writer for numerous publications covering a wide range of artists from Eminem to Kanye West, Zadie Smith to Jay-Z.

91探花 Football Players Recognized as Outstanding Scholar-Athletes

91探花 seniors JJ Bussgang and Greg Livingston will be honored as top scholar-athletes at the 43rd awards dinner of the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame on May 3. The Scholar-Athlete award is one of the most prestigious in high school football. They were nominated for the award by Coach Kevin MacDonald.

鈥淚 was excited when I heard the news. Both academics and athletics are really important to me and I鈥檓 proud to be recognized for both of them,鈥 says Greg, who will be attending Middlebury College this fall. He will play wide receiver on the football team. JJ, an offensive lineman, will be playing at another NESCAC school, Bowdoin College, where he hopes to study biology or biochemistry.
