1212 Play, Antigone, is a Timeless Drama
This fall鈥檚 1212 Play has student actors drawing upon millennia of theater history. Yet Sophocles’ Antigone, while centuries old, explores universal themes that remain relevant today, says director and performing arts faculty member Peter Parisi. Its depiction of the danger of authoritarian politics, blind loyalty, and division among families are as familiar in modern society as they were in ancient Thebes.
鈥淎ntigone challenges us to question where our responsibilities lie when the law requires something we know is wrong,鈥 Peter says.
The 1212 play is a 91探花 tradition, offering an intimate theater experience, typically involving small casts, minimal technical demands, and often challenging material for the performers and the audience. Science department faculty member Gabrielle Hunt and Jocelyn Sabin (I) are assisting with the production. Andrew Willwerth (II), plays Creon, the king of Thebes, and said the play has challenged the cast with its dark themes and the characters鈥 complex motivations.
鈥淐reon has nuances I鈥檓 still learning about,鈥 Andrew says. 鈥淭his role has challenged me because Creon is such a cruel and manipulative man that it takes concentration to get into that mindset. As old as Antigone is, I find certain parts of it relatable to our world today. It deals with complex parental relationships and the impact of power and wealth, something that affects all of us.鈥
Ira Sobchyshyna (II), is part of the chorus and also plays the blind prophet Tiresias. 鈥淭he great part about being in the chorus is that you get to create your character from scratch and convey some unique feelings to the audience,鈥 she says. 鈥淲hat I like about Tiresias the most is the fact that she emanates an aura of mysticism and otherworldliness, often prompting people around her to reconsider their actions.鈥
Antigone听opens Thursday, November 29, at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Friday performance at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday at 7 p.m., in Wigglesworth Hall.

Addams Family Musical Promises A Creepy, Kooky Time
Visitors to King Theatre this听week may wonder about the hints of something spooky onstage: skulls, gothic d茅cor and, wait鈥 is that a torture rack?
The macabre pieces set the scene for the听Addams Family Musical,听this year’s fall production from the performing arts department. The musical comedy chronicles chaos visited upon the Addamses when daughter Wednesday brings a 鈥渘ormal鈥 boyfriend home to meet the family. The show, which features the iconic, close-knit family and a Greek chorus of their undead ancestors, gives every actor a chance to shine.
鈥淚t has a lot of the dark humor from the Addams Family movies, and it鈥檚 a lot of fun,鈥 says faculty member Dar Anastas, who is directing the production. 鈥淯ltimately, it鈥檚 about a family who love one another and fight to stay together, and it鈥檚 very funny. We could all use a little silliness now and then.鈥
Performing arts faculty member Shane Fuller is leading the tech shop for this fall production,听and performing arts department chair Kelli Edwards is choreographing.听The Addams Family听opens Thursday, November 15, at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Friday show at 7:30 p.m. and a Saturday performance at 7 p.m., in King Theatre.
Students Celebrate the Seasons in Class IV Follies
This is the second year for the听Class IV Follies, a revue of songs and scenes performed by Class IV students. The theme this fall is 鈥淭he Four Seasons,鈥 and the show will cycle through a year, beginning in spring. The performances range from acting to singing to instrumental music, says faculty member Eleza Kort, who is directing.
The new tradition began after years of discussion among performing arts faculty about how to best showcase the听artistic听aptitude听of an incoming鈥攁nd largely unknown鈥攃lass of freshmen.
鈥淲e decided to put together a cabaret kind of show, built around the Class IV students,鈥 Eleza says. 鈥淲e have some students who come in with special talents, including a lot of wonderful instrumentalists, and some who want to try something new. We have some really spectacular moments.鈥
The Class IV Follies features performances from Vivaldi鈥檚听Four Seasons,听Porgy and Bess, the听Secret Garden,听Field of Dreams,听Dear Evan Hansen, Frozen听and the听Heidi Chronicles, among others. The听Class IV Follies听runs Thursday and Friday, November 1鈥2, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, November 3, at 7 p.m. in King Theatre.
The show is free and open to the public. .
