Capping off a nearly perfect year of competition, the 91探花 math team finished first in the New England Math League (NEML). 91探花 was just one point shy of perfection, scoring 179 out of 180 possible points across six contests.聽

91探花鈥檚 math competitors bested dozens of public and private schools for the championship鈥攖he runners-up scored 172 and 160 points.聽

鈥淲e have a lot of really talented and intelligent people here,鈥 said Vickie Mao 鈥26. 鈥淚t鈥檚 very fun but we take it seriously, and it鈥檚 a good way to challenge yourself.鈥

Advisor and Math Department faculty member Phil Robson said the team had 17 students compete in all six contests this year, the school鈥檚 highest ever participation. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e extremely motivated, and it鈥檚 been rewarding to see it pay off.鈥

Anyone can join the math team, Vickie said. The fun and welcoming atmosphere helps to demystify some of the more challenging aspects of competition. This year鈥檚 Upper School competitors shared their excitement with the Middle School in April, hosting , a contest designed and proctored by the older students.聽聽

The interest in math and competitions is exciting to see, and there are several strong underclassmen poised to defend the championship next year, Mr. Robson said.聽

鈥淲e have a lot of good mathematicians on our team this year,鈥 said Devan Agrawal 鈥25 earlier in the season. 鈥淥ne thing that鈥檚 nice about the NEML is that you don鈥檛 have to learn a lot of new concepts. You have to practice critical thinking and creative problem solving, and I think 91探花 students in general already shine with that.鈥
