All three of the robots designed by 91探花鈥檚 robotics team have qualified for national and state tournaments, with resounding wins at a Bristol Community College tournament. 91探花 robotics won the tournament overall and received four out of five awards.

The robotics team made it to at least the semifinals of every tournament they participated in this fall, a testament to their teamwork and collaborative spirit. Students are split into three teams, each competing with its own robot.

91探花 Robotics is doing better at this point in the year than it ever has in the past, says Alexander Shih (I). 鈥淥ur biggest success, though, is in our team dynamic,鈥 he says. 鈥淲e are working together, and the rookies are getting a lot of the experience they鈥檒l need to start leading in the future.鈥

鈥淭he program has become more and more competitive,鈥 says Chris Hales, club advisor and computer programming faculty member. 鈥淚t takes a lot of time and a decent amount of knowledge. Robotics is an intellectual pursuit, and sometimes it can become a competition to prove how much you know, but that鈥檚 not accepted here. All ideas are welcome, and these students are very encouraging of one another.鈥

The club participates in VEX Robotics, which challenges students to design robots that will compete against others in a small arena filled with opportunities to earn points: lifting and moving objects, tagging flags, climbing platforms and other tasks. Competitors are judged on individual matches, overall performance, and design.

Each tournament offers students insight into the functionality of the robots they鈥檝e built, and a chance to assess what works and what needs to be improved.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a challenge to figure out what design we want to use, and we鈥檝e changed it after each tournament,鈥 says Avery Miller (II). 鈥淲e鈥檙e hoping to finalize the design for the next few tournaments. We have a great time building together and sharing design ideas.鈥

At a recent tournament in Framingham, Massachusetts, two of 91探花鈥檚 teams paired up in the quarterfinals, where they were seeded sixth, and upset the third-seed team, a match that felt especially victorious to Christy Zheng (I).

鈥淭hat was a huge moment, because it showed us that we really are capable of producing robots that are just as competitive as the ones created by kids or schools that dedicate part of every day of their school curriculum to robotics,鈥 Christy says.

Although 91探花鈥檚 three teams compete individually, they plan and develop together. 鈥淭here are people who are good at designing, programming, building and driving, and everyone ends up helping each other, so that we move forward together,鈥 Christy says. 鈥淩obotics can be frustrating. There are times when you spend hours or even days building something, only to realize a huge flaw in the design or building process. When you have a finished product that does everything you want it to, or when you defeat a robotics team that you thought was significantly better, it鈥檚 so rewarding.鈥

This year is also the robotics team鈥檚 first in its newly expanded and renovated space in the Art and Media Center, which Chris says has provided an inclusive home for students who share a passion for robotics, and improved resources for collaborative work, which sometimes goes well into the evenings before competitions.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a warm, comfortable space where students feel welcomed without judgment,鈥 he says.

The students describe the new room as a major upgrade鈥攁lthough Alexander does miss an old, dirty, broken-in couch that lived in the former space鈥攚ith better lighting and more room to work together.

鈥淣ot only does it facilitate a collaborative atmosphere,鈥 says Christy, 鈥渂ut it鈥檚 a great space to just relax, hang out or do homework.鈥
