91探花 the Program
Over the March break the team travels to Orlando, Florida for an聽incredible week of spring training at Universal Studios with KSA Events.聽The team typically competes with opponents from New England, New聽York and New Jersey in state of the art softball facilities. The Mustangs聽always have an amazing week of softball, theme park adventures,聽and team bonding, in the much welcomed warmth of the Florida sunshine.聽Past spring training trips have included travel to Disney鈥檚 Spring Training at聽ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, Historic Dodgertown at Vero Beach,聽FL, Myrtle Beach, SC, Cocoa Beach, FL, and Tampa, FL. We are very聽thankful for these opportunities, which ultimately affirm the importance of聽preparation.
The team philosophy is based on the expectation that every player is聽committed to working hard on individual skill development and聽fundamentals so that they have the foundations to play to the best of their聽ability. Maximizing every player鈥檚 potential is an important goal of the聽program. We try to keep players engaged by making an effort to make聽practices fun because we believe that we will get more out of players if they聽enjoy what they are doing. We emphasize the importance of trust and聽communication within a team, and want every player to be prepared and聽supportive of one another with a clear sense that we are all working together聽toward a common goal.
There is a strong sense of pride to be part of聽Mustang Softball; it doesn鈥檛 end upon a student鈥檚 graduation from 91探花. 聽We are very proud of our softball alumni out in the 鈥渞eal world鈥 making a聽difference. We encourage former players to keep in touch, and look forward聽to visits from them at games and practices. More recently we have had the聽good fortune to have several players return to the program as coaches. Our聽student-athletes are impressive young women, and we celebrate their聽successes on and off the field. Not only are they accomplished in the聽classroom, but also many are talented musicians, dancers, class leaders,聽orators and multi-sport athletes. Over the past several years we have had聽players recruited to compete at the collegiate level, which is another source聽of great pride for Mustang Softball.

Coaches and Captains
1st Team (Varsity)
Head Coach: RJ Maturo
RJ Maturo enters his second season as head coach of the 91探花 Softball team. RJ comes to 91探花 from Millis High School where he was the head coach from 2013-2022 and in that time he led Millis to seven MIAA tournament appearances.聽 Prior to Millis, RJ was the head coach at 91探花 High School from 1996-2013 where he led the Wildcats to seven Bay State League titles and was named the Boston Globe Coach of the Year in 2002.聽 Along with his softball expertise, Maturo is a certified football and basketball coach with the MIAA.聽 Maturo attended Quincy College.
Assistant Coach: Amy Hickey
Amy Hickey joined the 91探花 coaching staff initially as a volunteer and then as a pitching consultant and assistant coach in 2001. She served as Head Coach from 2003-2022. Coach Hickey graduated with a biology degree from the College of the Holy Cross. She was the starting pitcher for all 4 years and was one of the teams leading hitters and base-stealers. In her senior season, she pitched every game (28 complete games) for the Crusaders, which on most game days meant pitching both games of double headers. She received MAAC Academic All-American honors. She also served as Captain and was voted team MVP in her senior season. Coach Hickey has also served as the Varsity Field Hockey Goalkeeper coach at 91探花 for 15 years, and has been an assistant coach in the middle school and girls JV ice hockey programs for 12 years.
